FAQ — Ocean Beach BJJ & Functional | San Francisco

Question 1

Do I need any experience to start?

Accepted Answer

Zero experience required. Most of our students have never trained martial arts before. We design the first session around your current fitness level and goals — whether you're a complete beginner or returning after years away.

Question 2

What happens in the free trial session?

Accepted Answer

Your instructor arrives at your location, sets up the equipment, and runs a 60-minute introductory session. You'll learn 2–3 practical self-defense techniques, get a feel for the training style, and receive a personalized program recommendation. No sales pressure — just training.

Question 3

How do I book my first session?

Accepted Answer

Fill out the contact form on our Contact page, or message us directly on WhatsApp. We'll confirm your free trial within 24 hours and coordinate a time and location that works for you.

Question 4

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

Comfortable athletic clothing — shorts or leggings and a t-shirt work perfectly. No special gear needed for your first session. We provide all training equipment including mats, pads, and protective gear.

Question 5

Where exactly can we train?

Accepted Answer

Anywhere with enough space: your living room, backyard, rooftop, garage, condo courtyard, local park, or beach. We've trained in apartments as small as 400 sq ft and on Ocean Beach at sunrise. If you have a space, we'll make it work.

Question 6

What equipment do you bring?

Accepted Answer

Everything. Depending on the session type, we bring portable interlocking mats (up to 4m × 4m), striking pads, sparring protection (helmet, gloves, shin guards), grappling dummies, and a first aid kit. You don't need to own a single piece of gear.

Question 7

How much space do I need?

Accepted Answer

A minimum of roughly 3m × 3m of clear floor space is ideal for most sessions. For group or family training, 4m × 4m is better. We'll assess your space when we arrive and adapt the session accordingly — we've never had to cancel due to space constraints.

Question 8

Which neighborhoods do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve all of San Francisco — Ocean Beach, Richmond, Sunset, SoMa, Mission, Noe Valley, Pacific Heights, and beyond. We also serve parts of the greater Bay Area. Contact us if you're outside SF and we'll let you know if we can reach you.

Question 9

Which program is right for me?

Accepted Answer

If you want maximum personalization and the fastest results, Private 1:1 is the answer. If you want structured belt progression at an accessible price, the Jiu-Jitsu Intensive is ideal. For families or couples, the Family Training format is designed for you. Foundation Night Classes are the best entry point if you're exploring BJJ for the first time.

Question 10

Can I switch programs after I start?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many students start with Foundation Night Classes and upgrade to Private 1:1 after a month or two. We'll recommend a transition when we think you're ready, or you can request it anytime.

Question 11

Is there a long-term contract?

Accepted Answer

The Jiu-Jitsu Intensive requires a 6-month commitment because the curriculum is structured around belt progression milestones. All other programs are flexible — pay per session or monthly with no lock-in. The free trial has zero commitment.

Question 12

Do you offer discounts for families or groups?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Family & Couples format is priced per session (not per person), so a family of 4 pays less than $63 per person. For B2B and condominium programs, we offer custom monthly packages starting at $2,000/month for resident access.

Question 13

Who is the instructor?

Accepted Answer

Our lead instructor holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with over 15 years of competitive and teaching experience. All instruction is delivered personally — we don't send substitutes. You train with the same instructor every session.

Question 14

Is BJJ safe for beginners?

Accepted Answer

Yes — especially in our format. Small group sizes (max 4 students) mean the instructor can monitor every student closely. We use progressive drilling before any live sparring, and sparring is always optional. Injuries are rare and we carry a full first aid kit to every session.

Question 15

What is your satisfaction guarantee?

Accepted Answer

If after your first paid session you don't feel you learned something directly applicable to real-world safety, you don't pay. No questions asked. We're confident enough in the quality of our instruction to back it completely.

Question 16

Can children train?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We work with children from age 6 and up. The Family Training format is specifically designed for mixed-age groups — kids, teens, and adults training together. Anti-bullying awareness and situational confidence are core parts of the youth curriculum.
